How to Fix Blurry Flipkart Barcodes on Thermal Printers: 5 Solutions for EKart Scan Errors

Before changing expensive printer hardware, inspect your label with this quick checklist:

  • Are individual vertical black bars touching each other? (Cause: Darkness/heat too high or print speed too fast).
  • Are vertical lines broken, jagged, or fuzzy like stairs? (Cause: PDF was converted to a low-res screenshot or JPG).
  • Are there white vertical streaks running through the barcode? (Cause: Dirty thermal printhead or stuck label adhesive).
  • Is the barcode smaller than standard 4x6 dimensions? (Cause: "Fit to Printable Area" is checked in your browser print window).

Fix 1: Stop Using Screenshot Tools (Switch to Vector Cropping)

The single most common mistake sellers make is using basic screenshot utilities or online image converters to crop Flipkart shipping labels. When a PDF is converted into a PNG or JPG bitmap:

  1. The sharp 1D Code128 barcode lines are rasterized into fixed pixels.
  2. Anti-aliasing software adds gray "smoothing" pixels between the black and white stripes.
  3. Direct thermal printers have only two states: heat on (black) or heat off (white). The printer tries to interpret gray pixels, resulting in ragged, uneven bar widths that barcode scanners cannot read.

Fix 2: Set Print Scale to "Actual Size (100%)"

When you click Print in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Adobe Acrobat, the default print option is often set to "Fit to Printable Area" or "Fit to Page".

This setting reduces the label by 4% to 8% to satisfy arbitrary non-printable margins. This fractional scaling forces the printer to merge neighboring micro-bars together.

  • In the print preview dialog, click More Settings.
  • Under Scale, select Actual Size or set custom scaling to exactly 100%.
  • Ensure margins are set to None (0 mm).

Fix 3: Clean the Thermal Printhead (Fix White Streaks)

Direct thermal printers (such as the TSC TE244, TVS LP 46, Xprinter XP-420B, and Zebra ZD220) rely on microscopic heating pins. Over weeks of dispatching hundreds of parcels, adhesive glue from roll stickers and carbon paper dust bake onto these pins.

This residue acts as a heat insulator, preventing pins from transferring heat and causing faded vertical streaks right through your barcode.

  1. Turn off the printer power switch and unplug the power adapter.
  2. Open the printer cover and locate the heating strip on the underside of the printhead.
  3. Take a lint-free cotton swab moistened with 99% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA).
  4. Gently wipe the printhead strip horizontally from one side to the other.
  5. Allow it to dry completely for 60 seconds before closing the lid and turning the printer back on.

Fix 4: Balance Darkness (Density) and Print Speed

If your barcode looks overly dark, thick, or "bleeding", the printer darkness setting is too high for your current roll paper sensitivity.

In your Windows printer preferences:

Fix 5: Test Scan with a Smartphone Before Courier Pickup

Do not wait for the courier pickup executive to arrive before discovering a scan failure. You can test your labels immediately after printing:

  • Open the default camera app on your Android or iPhone (or download any free barcode scanner app).
  • Point the camera at the 1D Code128 AWB barcode at the top of the Flipkart label.
  • If your phone instantly decodes the tracking number (e.g. `FMPC...`), the courier handheld terminal will scan it smoothly.
  • If your phone struggles to focus or cannot read the code, check Fix 1 (vector cropping) and Fix 2 (scaling) immediately.
